Grand Opening Gala
Join Co-Chairs Bobbi and Stephen Polk as the Detroit Zoological Society rolls out the white carpet in celebration of the highly anticipated Polk Penguin Conservation Center. Don’t miss your chance to be the first to see the penguins’ new home at the Grand Opening Gala, “An Evening in Antarctica” on Saturday, April 9, 2016.
Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and an exquisite sit-down dinner inside the new $30 million facility. The Polk Penguin Conservation Center represents the largest and most spectacular project the Detroit Zoological Society has ever undertaken. One of the most dramatic features is a chilled 326,000-gallon, 25-foot-deep aquatic area that will allow visitors to watch as penguins explore their habitat. Two acrylic underwater tunnels will provide guests with views above and below water as the birds dive and soar.
Inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary Antarctic expeditions and epic crossings of the Drake Passage, the facility will feature 4-D effects such as polar blasts, rough waves and snow, and physical elements including an ice crevasse and waterfall. The building’s exterior will evoke a tabular iceberg. The habitats will ensure an optimal environment for the penguins’ welfare and encourage wild behavior, from diving and porpoising to nesting and rearing young.
Tickets for “An Evening in Antarctica” have sold out. For questions, contact Julie Geisinger at [email protected] or call (248) 336-5735.
This is a 21-and-older event. This is a black-tie event. “Penguin suits” required. All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Polk Penguin Conservation Center.
